Is Sugar Poisoning You? Probably Is!


That’s right … you are probably being poisoned right before your eyes!

No one is saying it is happening deliberately… but according to the author of  “Sweet Poison”, Australian author and solicitor David Gillespie  you can’t help consuming too much sugar if you eat an average diet. If you are a very busy person the chances are you eat on the run and especially look for high energy snacks and fast food that are packed full of sugar.

By average diet we’re saying breakfast cereal and fruit juice to start the day, a coke with lunch and ‘god forbid’ a high sugar take away meal in the evening.

I recall seeing the CEO of the Australian Diabetes Foundation some years ago may a plea to the public to watch their sugar intake because of the rapid rise in diabetes especially the preventable type 2 diabetes.  I turned to my wife and said “If he was serious he would have a can of soft drink in one hand and a McDonald’s hamburger in the other and say “Please enjoy these occasionally … but not every day.”

Two important points that I recall from hearing David Gillespie speak on ABC Radio recently were that:

  1. the more sugar you eat the more it suppresses your bodies in built ‘hunger suppressants’ … which then leads that person to feeling like they want to keep eating, further compounding the problem; and
  2. the second point is the almost immediate damage that sugar does to your bodies functioning as your body very efficiently converts the sugar (say in fruit juice or soft drink) into fat in your blood stream.

So what to do about the problem of living in a modern society.

Other things to do include:

  • read the labels before buying packaged or processed foods and if the sugar content is high choose something else.
  • eat fresh fruit and vegetables daily and when the plate of food is colourful it has nutitional balance in it too.
  • drink water when thirsty … and tap water in many cities is as good, or better than bottled water.
  • walk every day … take yourself for a walk and leave the car at home every chance you get.
